I don’t know much about the vinyl toy universe. Thankfully, The Vinyl Frontier is on the way. The film documents and explores the phenomenon of vinyl toy collecting. Appearances by Ron English, Frank Kozik, and help to fill out the context – looking at both artistic process and collecting impulse. (via Living Proof).

Barcelona agency Grey produced these spots for Pilot Pen – tattooing LEGO figures with typical, if not ornate tattoo designs. The intent is to showcase the fine tip of the “extra fine nib.” In this, tattoos are a nice touch. Fine line, especially, has been more widely recognized by the general public of late.

I can’t help, however, but to dislike the gross stereotyping of tattoo culture. A biker. A prisoner. A pirate. Tattooing has come along way, and so to has public perception. The lone woman in the LEGO set has a bloody tramp stamp.

All that being said, the campaign is inventive and playful. And, I do appreciate when company’s like Pilot Pen take a minor risk.

Radio Slave, aka Matt Edwards, gets together with Devilrobots on a new version of their Tofu vinyl toy from Medicom. The “No Sleep No Tofu” toy comes in a 100% size in a black/white colorway and is now available from Beams.

Shepard Fairey presents his first original vinyl figure in 11 years. The character, Mr. Spray, was first introduced by the artist in 2004, as street-art appropriation of an advertising character design of the 1950s. The character comes in a black and a red version, each limited to 350 pieces worldwide. The toy was developed in collaboration with Strangeco and is now available from colette.
